Crown Lobby

(March 2005)

Contemporary hotel enhances old landmark.

The Victorian landmark pub, The Crown in Cricklewood , which was historically associated with Irish navvies, has undergone a UK £22 million development, in close liaison with English Heritage. Result is an enhanced environment for the local clientele combined with a top end hotel and restaurant in an upcoming area of North West London.

The brief from client Mr Tom Moran was to bring a contemporary Irish hotel to London, and the new 4 star Crown Moran Hotel, designed by John Duffy Design Group of Dublin, incorporates the old arched exterior at the side of the public house with the interior of the hotel’s foyer. English Heritage had specific requirements relating to materials used on floors, walls and ceilings and the new and old buildings had to complement each other, whilst also being seen as individual properties.

The challenge’ said John Duffy, ‘was to create a modern building to complement the splendour of the Grade 11 listed Crown public house by creating an elegant environment.’

Guests entering the hotel through 5 metre high revolving doors are greeted by the triple height glass atrium which links the restored sandstone façade of the old public house with the new limestone building. The reception area provides old fashioned comfort in a modern style with marble flooring, bespoke design rugs and contemporary porcelain chandeliers casting a soft light on the atrium foyer and seating areas. Marrying well with the existing sandstone building, the light cast by the translucent chandeliers - custom designed and created by Diffuse in fine unglazed porcelain tiles suspended in tiers - is warm and welcoming. The award-winning porcelain Halo table lamps are also in the reception and lobby area and in the restaurant.

The feature in the reception area is a marble and mild steel staircase leading up to the mezzanine floor and down to the leisure centre, swimming pool and gym.
